Letter From President Kennedy to Chairman Khrushchev
In this letter, Kennedy talks about Cuba and the refugees that have fled after trying to gain their freedom. He tries to tell Khrushchev that the United States aren't trying to over take Cuba, but they can't let all of the refugees run everywhere and let Cuba affect the entire world by toning down the hemisphere's aggression. Kennedy attempts to demonstrate that Cuban people should have their own choice in deciding their " own future by democratic processes freely to cooperate with their Latin American neighbors."
I believe that Kennedy is trying to thaw out the Cold War by getting on the Soviet union's nice side by not pushing too far, but giving his idea to help out the Soviet Union's ally. Kennedy tries to make nice with the people that have hated the U.S. for the longest time, which is a stupid move because the Soviet Union won't just stop if they have a way to threaten the United States, since they are at war with each other, like the arms race and space race and even the Cold War.

1950's Cigarette Advertisement
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_OJRwHE_EszA/SxVBvZJe8EI/AAAAAAAAFQM/SlBeWrpvamI/s400/1950s+PHILIP+MORRIS+Lucille+Ball+vintage+cigarettes+advertisement+hollywood+smoking.bmp
This advertisement exemplifies the new consumerism culture of excess, boasting the "king size" of the pack. Claims are made about the product that dont sound remotely true, but they are just in place to coax the consumer into purchasing the cigarettes. This is a perfect example of the 1950's conformist culture, saying that "millions know" that this brand is the best.
I believe that this advertisement is aimed at people who dont truly care about what their buying or what is said in fine print but instead what is said in the biggest bold letters. This is also a reflection of the culture of smoking that had been prevalent since colonial times when colonists relied on the trade of tobacco for their survival.

Ladies Home Journal
http://faculty.tnstate.edu/tcorse/h2020/ladies_home_journal.htm
This article talks about women in this time period and talks about how they were not treated well for thir hard work. If something went wrong, such as kids getting sick, they would be labeled terrible mothers, and even when they worked all day, only having maybe 30 minutes of peace time if they were lucky, they would NOT be appreciated or thanked for their hard work.
This is significant because it shows that women, although they were steadily pushing for more rights, they were still being objected and were not being appreciated as much as they would have liked. In addition, this source can be significant because it gives insight on how different the American family culture was different from today.
